Viceroy’s House (12)
2017 ( UK | India | Sweden ) ( Biography, Drama, History )
DIRECTOR: Gurinder Chadha
STARRING: Gillian Anderson, Michael Gambon, Hugh Bonneville
Lord Louis Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) is the last viceroy of India. His job is to transfer the country to independence and he’s joined in a sumptuous Delhi palace by his wife (Gillian Anderson) and daughter (Lily Travers). However the servants are a microcosm of wider tensions and opinions which vary among Hindus and Muslims about whether their country should remain united or split into India and Pakistan, in accordance with the wishes of Muslim leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Gurinder Chadha’s film is a heartfelt and very personal drama about the traumas of partition, which strives to dramatise the epochal events of 1947 for the widest possible audience, including those who know nothing of the independence of India or the creation of Pakistan. Viceroy’s House brings a balanced perspective to its worthy, historically grounded story while taking care to enliven the details with absorbing drama.
