A member’s choice film. Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) is a wealthy and adventurous businessman who savours a good challenge. Crown orchestrates an elaborate New York museum heist to steal a painting by Monet valued at $100 million. The insurers of the artwork send ace insurance investigator Catherine Banning (Faye Dunaway) to assist the police in solving the crime.
From the beginning, Banning suspects Crown is behind the theft. A game of cat-and-mouse ensues that gives Crown exactly what he was seeking, as his psychiatrist puts it: “A worthy adversary.”
Steve McQueen settles into the role with ease and aplomb, in a film that whisks viewers to an exotic world with style and sex appeal.
Bullitt (15) – 8.30pm
1968 ( USA ) ( Action, Crime, Mystery )
DIRECTOR: Peter Yates
STARRING:STEVE MCQUEEN, JACQUELINE BISSET, ROBERT VAUGHN
In one of his most famous roles, Steve McQueen stars as tough-guy police detective Frank Bullitt, assigned for 48 hours to watch a witness before his trial. However, when the witness and another officer are shot, Bullitt decides to investigate the case on his own, much to the dismay of an ambitious Senator (Robert Vaughn) who wants to shut the investigation down, hindering Bullitt’s plan to bring the killers to justice.
Steve McQueen is cool as ice in this thrilling police movie that also happens to contain one of the most exciting car chases in film history, a sequence that revolutionised Hollywood’s standards. McQueen (doing his own driving) races up and down the hills of San Francisco, while an impressive hand-held camera records the perilous pursuit and traffic in thrilling detail (it won an Oscar for Best Editing).
